Working with independent theatre companies is something we always value. These productions bring passion, creativity and bold storytelling to the stage, and our role is to make sure the sound supports and elevates that storytelling. One project that stands out for us was collaborating with Little Big Theatre Co on We Aren’t Kids Anymore, a heartfelt story about growing up, friendship and identity, told with honesty, humour and warmth.

From the beginning, we were brought in to take care of the full sound design, system design and deployment, as well as mixing throughout the season. The creative team needed a system that was versatile enough to handle both dialogue and live music, and tuned to get the very best out of the venue.

We started with a wireless microphone package that would give the performers consistency and confidence on stage. The setup included EW-DX EM2 Dante receivers, SK transmitters and JAG IMX6A headsets. This combination provided reliable coverage, natural vocal tone and the kind of durability that gave the cast one less thing to worry about during the run.

The venue already had an in-house PA of QSC K10.2 loudspeakers, which gave us a solid backbone to work from. Rather than replacing it, we reconfigured and retuned the system to suit the space and the needs of the production. To give the live band a richer and more powerful foundation, we added a subwoofer, which brought the right amount of weight and drive to the music while keeping vocals clear and present.

Once the system was in place, our focus turned to shaping the sound of the production itself. The piece moved constantly between styles, which meant the mix had to be flexible and responsive. Mixing each night we were able to adapt to the rhythms of the performers, bring subtle emphasis to emotional beats and keep the balance between voice and music just right. The goal was always to serve the story, making sure the technical elements blended seamlessly into the performance without ever drawing attention to themselves.

Looking back, what made this project so special was the way it combined technical design with creative collaboration. This was not just about deploying equipment but about making the most of the resources available, working closely with the team, and ensuring the production was supported. Being able to mix and sculpt the sound for We Aren’t Kids Anymore was a privilege, and we are proud to have played a part in helping bring such a meaningful show to life.
